Dog Breeder Outreach & Support

Our goal is to rescue, rehab (when needed) and re-home Golden Retrievers and Golden Retriever mixes. One specific area of focus for GRRR is developing relationships with dog breeders who either have dogs that they are retiring from their programs or dogs with special medical needs. GRRR is very fortunate to be able to provide care for dogs with special medical needs through our Golden Angel fund. We have worked with dog breeders in Colorado and the Midwest to place their dogs into loving forever homes. Below are a few examples of recent placements.

Avery

GRRR was recently contacted by a breeder in the Midwest who had a special needs puppy that they wanted our help in placing. The puppy has a deformity in her right front leg and right front paw. One of her bones is bowed out and the other bone has folded in on itself, likely because of the bowing. Her right front paw also never fully developed. After a consult with GRRR’s vet as well as with an orthopedic vet, it was decided that Avery would need to have her leg removed. Avery has been placed in a loving foster to adopt home and will have the surgery (at GRRR’s expense) in the coming weeks. Avery has no idea that she has special needs and is expected to adapt well! Avery is very happy in her forever home and is not available for adoption.

Casey

A Colorado Golden Retriever breeder contacted GRRR regarding a dog that they had that was atypical of their other goldens. Casey was born without a paw on his left front leg. He is missing his paw just below the bend in his wrist. Casey was placed in a loving foster home that soon became what we refer to as a “foster failure”. Casey found his forever family! The family investigated what they could do to make sure he had the best possible life with his short leg. Due to his age, removal was not an option. It was ultimately determined that, to preclude possible future gate and back issues, a prosthesis would be the best option for Casey. Today, Casey is a happy and rambunctious golden running on all fours loving Colorado life to the fullest.

Clyde

Clyde came to GRRR from a breeder in Missouri when he aged out of their breeding program. The GRRR volunteer who headed to Missouri to pick up Clyde was met by a larger than average Golden – Clyde weighed in well north of 100lbs! The volunteer quickly also realized that car travel was new and a bit frightful for this pup. After his car trip to Colorado, Clyde found his safe place to be under a bed. However, only Clyde’s head fit! Our vet saw Clyde for an exam, bloodwork, vaccinations and neutering. It was found that Clyde had a low thyroid level. The combination of thyroid medicine and an active lifestyle resulted in a svelte and happy Clyde. He is greatly loved!
